General

Q1: How do I check whether my modem is working?

ProxyNow!

Q: What is a ProxyNow!?

A: ProxyNow! is an Internet access proxy server which will allow multiple users on the network to connect to the Internet simultaneously using a single dial-up line. e.g. you may have a network of 20 computers but only one computer can access the Internet because a modem is attached to that computer and you have only one ISP account. The remainder 19 users cannot access the Internet or share that modem line. By installing ProxyNow!, all 20 users on the network will be able to share that modem and ISP account to access the internet. They can all surf and access the internet together at the same time as though you have a leased line connection? Leased lines can be expensive but now with ProxyNow!, your single dial-up line can act as one.

Q: Does that mean that ProxyNow! will allow ALL Internet application to work transparently through one connection?

A: Not exactly. Most application, such as web browser, telnet, ICQ, IRC, FTP, news, email, and realplayer etc will work through ProxyNow! with some minor configuration. But some application, such as Netmeeting, VDO Live and Internet games does not work through ProxyNow!. The reason is these application try to connect to the server directly. Since there is not direct connection to the Internet at the workstation, this will surely failed. We are currently working on this problem, and a fixed is due to come out on the next major release.

Q: What is  needed  to install ProxyNow!?

A: To benefit from ProxyNow!, you will need a LAN ( networked PCs ). You will need one connection to the internet and one ISP account. It may be a Analog ( normal telephone line ), ISDN, Xdsl or Leased Line. I-Proxy Pro server software can be installed on any Pentium PC running Windows 95, 98, NT4.0 and above. The PC you install ProxyNow! on, is preferably but not necessarily be a dedicated server. This is also the PC you will connect your modem to.

Q: Why should I use ProxyNow! instead of an internet access router (or hardware router)?

A: ProxyNow! being a software proxy have many advantages over hardware solutions. Firstly, hardware is much more difficult to update and upgrade. New protocols and standards (e.g. SOCKS, IPV6), are always emerging and software solutions are easily upgradeable by software patches compared to hardware solutions. So you will always be able to support the latest technology with software solutions like ProxyNow!. Another Huge advantage is control and management. Hardware routers have very little control over the users and the usage of internet access because of their limited processing power. It is like a bridge between two countries with no immigration department. You will just get a bill from the ISP and almost no information on justifying the amount. Because Internet Access can be costly and it is constantly abused with users using Internet access for purposes with little or no relation to their work e.g. checking personal e-mails from Hotmail and Yahoo. using ICQ and other chat programs, browsing pornographic sites etc., companies were reluctant to invest in Internet access for the staff although Internet access has become a very important instrument for information and productivity. ProxyNow! is like a bridge between two countries with an immigration department. It's set of easy to use management tools enables you to control usage by user or by PC (IP address). You control what time the users can or cannot use the Internet, as well as a quota system. You can also ban certain sites e.g. 'pornographic' sites from being accessed. You can also restrict certain functions such as using Chat programs, FTP, Video streaming etc. There is also a log that will record all Internet usage by user so there is a record of which sites they visited etc that you can use for reporting and analysis to keep your ISP bill amount controlled. ProxyNow! can also be set so that users have to log on to use the Internet.

Q: I just install ProxyNow!, how to I tell ProxyNow! to dialup to Internet and start servicing my workstation?

A: Before you start doing anything, please make sure that TCP/IP protocol is already installed and have been assigned an IP address. Please refer to the Microsft Windows documentation regarding this. Also make sure that a modem is install and a proper Dial-up Networking profile has been created. Try to dial this profile before proceeding to make sure that the settings are correct. Again, please refer to the Microsoft Windows documentation. If all goes well, the first thing to do after installing ProxyNow! is to start ProxyNow! Server. Under Microsoft Windows 9x, go to "Start", "Program Files", "StartUp" and "ProxyNow! Server". Under Microsoft Windows NT, go to Control Panel, double click on Services. Look for "ProxyNow! Server", click on Start button. After ProxyNow! Server is started, run ProxyNow! Console by going to "Start", "Program Files", "ProxyNow!" and "ProxyConfig Console". Click on "Connection", on the right hand side, your should see "Active Profile". The list should be empty. If you see anything on the list, select them one by one and click on the delete button. You should see a drop down box named "Profile". Click on the down arrow on the far right of the box, it should display a list of Dial-up Networking profiles that you have created. Select the one that you want ProxyNow! to use to connect to the Internet. Under "Login Name", put in the username that your ISP has assigned to you. Under "Password", put in the password that your ISP has assigned to you. Retype the password in "Enter Password Again". Click add button, then "Save Settings". Close ProxyConfig Console, and restart ProxyNow! Server. ProxyNow! is now ready to service your workstation.

Q: I already have an Internet access router or a leased line, do I still need ProxyNow!?

A: Yes! Routers rarely have much management and control tools. ProxyNow! can add management and control tools to your existing set-up and you will now be able to control who can use Internet access, where they can surf to and which sites they are banned from visiting, when and what time they can use Internet and what can they do on the internet (http, ftp, chat programs etc). You will also have a log of all internet activities which you can use for reporting and analysis when your Internet bill arrives.

Q: What is the advantage of ProxyNow! over other software solutions?

A: Besides having comparable feature list, ProxyNow! is developed locally. That means you have an almost immediate response time and better technical support. We will also add in whatever features the market requests for to suit the local Internet access needs.. Overseas products usually do not have a local office and will depend solely on dealer's expertise on that product. Another main advantage of ProxyNow! is the extremely easy installation and setup of management and control features. Installation of the server can be as fast as 10 minutes and configuring the client stations is usually below 1 minute. The user guide is comprehensive and you do not need to be a network expert to set it up.

Q: Will multiple users logging into the Internet at the same time slow down the browsing?

A: Yes and no. In a normal situation, most users browse the Internet to look for information. A lot of time is actually spent on reading the pages displayed on the browser. During this time, no data is being transfer. This is where ProxyNow! will help you maximize the connection by allowing other users to use the bandwidth. If a user is already on the Internet, the next user will go straight into the Internet without the need to connect (which on analog lines can be slow. You have to dial, wait for connection, verify the password etc before you can access the Internet). 5-15 users should be able to share one Internet connection with little degradation in performance. ProxyNow! can also be configure to 'time share' the connection if you have a huge number of users. For example, Marketing Dept will access the Internet from 8.00am - 2.00pm and other departments from 2.00pm - 7.00pm etc. However, if most users access the Internet to download files, you might see a slow down in download speed. If your network consists of very 'heavy users' who is always downloading large programs files, it is recommended to upgrade the line to an ISDN or XDSL line connection.

Q: How do I enter my activation key in ProxyNow!? And how do I get the activation key in the first place?

A: Run "ProxyConfig Console". Once loaded, select "License -> License..." from the menu. Enter your activation key under "Activation Key". Then press "OK" when finished. Close the "ProxyConfig Console" and restart the ProxyNow! server for the license to activate. You will need to contact your dealer or InternetNow Sdn Bhd for activation key.

Technical

Q: Why does sometime the startup logo takes a long time to "go away"?

A: As part of the startup process, ProxyNow! load the cache. If the cache happen to be every large. It might take sometime to load it up.

Q: How do I configure the browser on my workstation to access the internet?

A: Most modern browser support proxy. Generally speaking, enable proxy support, and put ProxyNow! server IP address when you are ask for proxy server address. The default proxy port is 3128. Under Microsoft Internet Explorer 5, this option is available in "Tools", "Internet Options", "Connections", "LAN Settings". Checked "Use a proxy server". Under "Address", put the proxy server IP address. Under "Port", put 3128(ProxyNow! default). Under Netscape Communicator, this option is available in "Edit", "Preferences", "Advanced", "Proxies". Select "Manual proxy configuration", click on "View". For "Type" "HTTP", "Security" and "FTP", put the proxy server IP address and port 3128. Please leave the other "Type"s blank.

Q: Why is the "Profile" list on the "Connection" section in ProxyConfig Console empty?

A: 1) The Dial-up Networking is not installed, or no Dial-up profile has been created. Please refer to Microsoft Windows documentation for setting this up. 2) The Dial-up Networking profile is created after ProxyNow! Server is started. Since ProxyNow! only retrieve Dial-up Networking profiles on startup only, you will need to restart ProxyNow! Server.

Q: How do I install or uninstall ProxyNow! Server service under Microsoft Windows NT/2000?

A: Go to "Start", "Run". To install the ProxyNow! Server service, type

"c:\program files\internetnow!\proxynow! x.xx\proxynow" -i

To uninstall the ProxyNow! Server service, type

"c:\program files\internetnow!\proxynow! x.xx\proxnow" -u

Note that this is only an example. The drive ("c") and directory might vary on your installation.

Q: When I start ProxyConfig Console, it give me a message saying "Unable to connect to server"?

A: The size of the file "proxynow.cfg" in windows directory is zero or is corrupted. In Microsoft Windows 9x, is usually "\windows\proxynow.cfg". In Microsoft Windows NT, is usually "\winnt\proxynow.cfg". Try to restore it from the backup copy. The backup copy is under "pxclient" folers in where ProxyNow! is install. By default, is under "\program files\internetnow!\proxynow! x.xx\pxclient\proxynow.cfg". The directory might vary on your installation. Copy this file to the windows directory.

Q: When I run ProxyNow! Console, it show me a dialog box to login to ProxyNow! server. What is wrong?

A: Make sure that the ProxyNow! server is running. If install on Microsoft Windows 9x platform, make sure that a small icon appear on the Microsoft Windows tray area. When you move your mouse pointer over it, it should read "ProxyNow! Server". If install on Microsoft Windows NT platform, make sure that the ProxyNow! Server service is install and started. Open up the control panel, double click on "Services". Look for "ProxyNow! Server". Make sure that the status is started.

Q: Does ProxyNow! provide firewall protection?

A: ProxyNow! is able to protect workstations behind the proxy because the only route to them is through ProxyNow! and ProxyNow! does not allow connections from any computers other than those on the local network. Furthermore, I your setup is using a dial-up connection to the Internet, a hacker will have a harder time finding the ProxyNow! machine. This is because most IP address on the diap-up connection is assign dynamically by the ISP. However, since the ProxyNow! machine is directly connected to the Internet, ProxyNow! itself is not completely protected from the Internet. It is recommended that you remove all networking protocols from the ProxyNow! machine except TCP/IP and disable file and printer sharing on the ProxyNow! machine.

Q: I try to surf the internet using my favorite browser and ProxyNow! give me this message "You are not allow to use this protocol because maximum number of clients allowed has been exceeded". But I purchased 5 users license, and only 3 user have use the ProxyNow! today.

A: ProxyNow! remember all workstations that had use it services since it had started. This accounting will only be reset if ProxyNow! Server is restarted. So, for example, you had purchased 5 users license. The ProxyNow! Server is started on yesterday. Since it had started, 2 users had utilized it services to access the Internet, each using their own workstation. Today, 3 users had access ProxyNow! Server using their own workstation. Up until this moment, 5 workstations had access ProxyNow!. So we had reach the license limit. When the 4th user today try to access the Internet, it will be rejected, because ProxyNow! had 5 registered workstations. There are two solution to this problem. Firstly is to purchase additional user license. Secondly is to restart ProxyNow! Server.

Q: I start the ProxyNow!, but it suddenly stop/exit shortly after that.

A: There is two possible cause for this. Firstly, the file "proxynow.cfg" in windows directory is zero or is corrupted. Secondly, your might have a wrong license or the license had expired. Try to open the file "c:\proxynow_startup.log" with a text editor(eg, notepad), and look at the last line. It will usually give you an idea of why the proxy failed to startup.

Q: How do I configure Microsoft Internet Explorer to go through ProxyNow!?

A: Launch Microsoft Internet Explorer. Select from the menu "Tools -> Internet Options -> Connections" or "View -> Options -> Connections", depending on which version of Microsoft Internet Explorer that you are using. Make sure that you do not select any option to use modem or automatic dial-up. Instead, select "Never dial a connection", "Connect using LAN", "I already have an internet connection", or "Use existing internet settings". Check on the checkbox "Use proxy server", and enter the ProxyNow! machine's IP address into the "Address". As for the "Port", enter 3128. If you see a checkbox here that read "Automatically detect settings" or "Use automatic configuration script", make sure that they are both uncheck.

Q: How do I configure Netscape Communicator to go through ProxyNow!?

A: Start Netscape Communicator, select "Edit -> Preference" from the menu. Click on "Advanced", then "Proxies". Select "Manual proxy configuration". Then click on the "View" button. Enter the ProxyNow! machine's IP address into "Address of proxy server to use", and 3128 into "Port" for "HTTP", "Security", and "FTP". Please leave the "Socks", "Gopher", and "WAIS" blank.

Q: How do I configure ICQ to go through ProxyNow!?

A: Click on the ICQ button to bring up the main menu, and choose "Preferences". Then click on the "Connection" tab. Under "Internet Connection Type", select "I'm using a permanent internet connection(LAN)", and select "I am behind a firewall or proxy". After that, click on the "Firewall Settings" button. Select "I am using a SOCKS5 proxy server" and click next. Under "SOCKS5 Host", enter your proxy IP address. The "SOCKS5 Port" should be the default, which is 1080. Leave other settings as default(should be empty). Click next, then click on "done". At this point, you have to make a choice. That is, whether to use a DNS server to find an ICQ host and fixed it to a few specific host. The pro and cons is as follows.

1) When using DNS, you will have less problem connecting to ICQ host. Because the host is choosen on the fly. But this setup will be more "expensive". Because whenever ICQ try to look for an ICQ host, it sends a DNS query to the Internet. And if the Internet connection is not currently up, the proxy will dial to the Internet. As a side effect, some other software are known to issue DNS query on the background without your knowledge. So, you might find that ProxyNow! will sometime dial-up to the Internet for no apparent reason. But it is actually servicing a DNS request from one of the workstation. To use this setup, first bring up the "Preferences" dialog in ICQ. Click on "Servers" tab. You should see a list of server here. In most cases, you will only need one entry here. It should read "icq.mirabilis.com - 4000". If it is not, please make the necessary changes. Then click on "OK". Furthermore, you will need to use the proxy server as a DNS server for your Microsoft Windows(or whatever operating system that you are using). Please refer to your operating system's manual for the configuration. Now restart ICQ.

2) When not using DNS, you might sometime have problem connecting to ICQ host. Since the host list is fixed in ICQ, if all the host in the list is down, you would not be able to connect to ICQ. On the other hand, this setup will be less "expensive" than the setup in (1), as we already discuss in (1). To use this setup, first go to a workstation or server that has a direct connection to the Internet. Issue this command "ping icq.mirabilis.com" (without the quote). In Microsoft Windows platform, this can be done from "Start\Run\ping icq.mirabilis.com". From the program's output, you should see an IP address inside such as this "[205.188.153.116]". Note down the IP address. Repeat the "ping" command for as many time as you wish. This will be the list of ICQ host that the ICQ program will contact. Next, go to the "Preferences" dialog in ICQ. Click on "Servers" tab. Delete any existing server from the list. Now, add the list of IPs that you have collected just now. The port should be 4000. After you have finish adding all the host in the list, click on "OK". Now restart ICQ.

Q: How do I configure mIRC to go through ProxyNow!?

A: Run mIRC, open the "mIRC Setup". Select the "Firewall" tab. Check "Use SOCKS firewall". Under "Protocol", Select "Socks5". If you do not see an option for "Socks5", you are using an old version of mIRC, please install a newer version. Then on the "Hostname", enter the IP address of the ProxyNow! machine. Leave "User ID" and "Password" blank, and "Port" to the default 1080. Check "Initiate DCCs through firewall".

Q: Why can't I send or receive files via DCC from my IRC client through ProxyNow!?

A: This is because DCC uses a dynamically assigned port, it is impossible to provide a mapping or other services using ProxyNow!. However, this problem should be solve in the next major release of ProxyNow!.

Q: I'm able to get IRC working, but only one user are able to connect to one particular IRC host. When other user try to connect to the same host, it is rejected. Why?

A: For security reason, some IRC host deny more than one connection from a single IP address. Since your users are sharing one connection(hence one IP address) through the proxy, the host reject your request. This is to prevent someone to flood the IRC server.

Q: How do I configure my FTP client to go through ProxyNow!?

A: Most modern FTP client provide an option for you to pass through a firewall. This is how you should configure it. On the firewall setting, select the type "USER@HOST". Put the ProxyNow! IP address in "Server Address", and port 21. You could leave the firewall/proxy login blank.

Q: How do I access my personal POP3 mail through ProxyNow!?

A: There are two steps involved in this. First, you will need to configure the ProxyNow! Server to allow access to an external POP3 mail server. Launch "ProxyConfig Console", and click on the "Protocol" icon. Look under the "Defined Protocol Listing" for "Port" 1110 and 2550. If they are already there, skip to the second step, else proceed with the definition of two new protocols. Define two new protocols as follows:

Protocol Name : POP3 (Or you can put anything you wish)

Driver Name : pop3.now

Type : TCP

Listen at port : 1110

and

Protocol Name : SMTP (Or you can put anything you wish)

Driver Name : tcpmapping.now (Or smtp.now if you wish to keep a log of all email activity)

Type : TCP

Listen at port : 2550

Domain : ISP specific (For example, if your ISP is Jaring, put "smtp.jaring.my")

Mapping Port : 25

Direction : Outgoing

Click "Add", then the "Save Settings" button. Second step, go to the workstation where an external POP3 mail is to be access. Run the email client, and the setting is as follows:

Incoming POP3 server address : ProxyNow! machine's IP address

Incoming POP3 server port : 1110

Outgoing SMTP server address : ProxyNow! machine's IP address

Outgoing SMTP server port : 2550

Account name : username#popserver (eg, cychan#pop5.jaring.my)

Password : Your POP3 mailbox password

If you have MailNow! installed, you might consider setting "Outgoing SMTP server port" as 25. This will send your email through MailNow! server, to take advantage of the schedule mail sending.

Q: How do I configure ProxyNow! to access the news server?

A: This will involve two steps. Firstly, setup a tcp mapping in ProxyNow! for each news server that you wish to access. Launch "ProxyConfig Console", select the "Protocol" icon. Define a new protocol for each additional news server as follows:

Protocol Name : News Server N (Or you can put anything you wish)

Driver Name : tcpmapping.now

Type : TCP

Listen at port : 8119 (Or some other port > 1024 if this port is already used by someone else)

Domain : The IP address of the news server

Mapping Port : 119

Direction : Outgoing

Click "Add", then the "Save Settings" button. Secondly, you have to tell your workstation's news client application to locate the news server from ProxyNow! IP address, and the proxy port that you have defined. For example, if your ProxyNow! is configured with an internal IP address of 10.0.0.1, and the proxy port you defined is 8119, then configure the news client to find the news server at 10.0.0.1:8119. Do the same for any additional news server that you wish to access. But remember that you must use a different "Listen at port" when defining the tcp mapping for each news server.

Q: How do I perform a remote administration?

A: To perform a remote administration, it involved two steps. First step is to activate the remote administration on ProxyNow! server. Launch any browser that has been configure to go through ProxyNow!. On the address, enter "ftp://ftp@remotecfg/". When the page is loaded with the remote access IP address, press the "Refresh" button on your browser to ensure that is not come from the cache. Note down the remote IP address. Second step is to access the ProxyNow! server from your remote site. In order to access ProxyNow! server remotely, you need the "ProxyConfig Console" program. The program is all the files under the folder "pxclient" in the ProxyNow! directory. Run "ProxyConfig Console", you will be prompted a login dialog box(Please note that the login dialog box will not be shown if you had a ProxyNow! server running on the same machine. Please shutdown the ProxyNow! server first). Enter the IP address you noted down earlier into "IP Address", leave the "Port" as 3333. If you had configure a remote password before, enter it into "Password". If not, just leave it blank. Click on the "OK" button. Now you should see a message saying "Retrieving remote configuration". Once this is done, you could configure the remote ProxyNow! server as usual.

Q: ProxyNow! does not dial.

A: There are a few reasons why the ProxyNow! server does not dial. 1) Please make sure that the modem is power-on and fully functional. Shutdown the ProxyNow! server, and try to dial-up manually using the same Dial-up Networking profile, ISP username and ISP password as the ProxyNow! server. Make sure that you could connect to your ISP. 2) Some other program might be accessing the modem. For example, a fax program. Make sure that no other suspicious is running. 3) The Microsoft Windows system might had become unstable. Restart the computer and try again.

Q: It dial, but doesn't connect to the ISP. It just keep dialing and dropping the line.

A: Shutdown the ProxyNow! server. Dial-up manually using the same Dial-up Networking profile, ISP username and ISP password as the ProxyNow! server. Make sure that you could connect to your ISP and the browser could surf as usual(after disabling the proxy setting in the browser, but please remember to enable it after the testing).

Q: When I run my browser, it just show me the ProxyNow! message "ProxyNow! is connecting to the Internet ... " for the pass 5 minutes. It just does not seems to be able to connect to the Internet`. Why?

A: Please refer to the above answer on "It dial, but doesn't connect to the ISP. It just keep dialing and dropping the line.".

Q: ProxyNow! seems to dial for no apparent reason. No one is accessing the Internet or email but it still randomly start dialling to the ISP. Sometime is also does not seems to disconnect from Internet after the idle timeout. Again, no one is accessing the Internet or email. How do you explain this?

A: This usually happen if you are using the DNS service provided by ProxyNow!. There are a number of background network activities that uses this protocol. Since you do not see them, they appear to be ghost dialling. You can confirm this by checking whether you have assign the ProxyNow! machine as the DNS server on your workstation's TCP/IP setting (please refer to your operating system manual regarding the setting). You could remove the DNS protocol from ProxyNow! if you feel that this will be "expensive". However, if the ProxyNow! is not configure to provide DNS service, and you do not notice any activity from the "ProxyConfig Console" activity log, some other setting might be affecting the connection. Firstly, make sure that Dial-up Networking is not configure to dial-up automatically. Under Microsoft Windows 95/98, double click on "My Computer" on your desktop, then double click again on "Dial Up Networking". Select "Settings" from the "Connections" menu. Make sure "Connect to the Internet as need" is not enabled. If it is enabled, select "Don't connect as needed". Under Windows NT, you will need to log in as Administrator. Then, select "Start -> Program Files -> Accessories -> Dial Up Networking". Select the phonebook entry that you have instructed ProxyNow! to use to connect to the Internet. Click on "More" and select "User Preferences". Click on the "Dialing" tab. You will see a box with a list of "Locations" under "Enable auto-dial by location". You may have only one location named "New Location". Also Make sure that the checkbox next to each of the locations if not checked. After this, click "OK" button. Repeat this process for each of the entries in the phone book. The other possibility is that some other program might be using the modem. In that case, ProxyNow! does not have control over the modem. Two programs that will intercept TCP activity and perform an auto diap-up are Microsoft Internet Explorer and MSN, eventhough they are not running. In Microsoft Internet Explorer 5, go to "Tools -> Internet Options -> Connections" and make sure that the option "Never dial a connection" is selected. In Microsoft Internet Explorer 4, go to "View -> Internet Options -> Connections", and make sure that it is not configured to use a modem, but rather use the LAN. If you wish to use Microsoft Internet Explorer on the ProxyNow! machine, then configure Microsoft Internet Explorer to use ProxyNow! as well, using the same settings as you used on your workstation. If MSN is installed on the ProxyNow! machine, an icon will appear on the system tray. Click on that icon, and select "MSN Options -> Connection Settings -> Options. Disable the option "use this service for all diap-up Internet access", and make the "Disconnect if idle for more than xx minutes" value longer than the setting you configured in ProxyNow! "Drop connection after inactivity duration of (minutes)" (under "Connection" icon, then "Connection" button). It is also possible to have this kind of behavior if you install a third-party dialer on the ProxyNow! machine. ProxyNow! only support Microsoft's Dial-up Networking, other dialers are not supported. This might also due to some application that uses a modem for its operation, such as a fax software. Please make sure that no other application that uses a modem is installed. In addition, programs that perform periodic checks, such as an email client, will force a dialup if it is configure to retrieve external pop mail. If your mailbox is currently empty, only a few bytes are exchanged. It is easy to miss the connection activity in the dial-up networking monitor. If all these failed, launch the "ProxyConfig Console". Select "Logs", "View Logs" from the menu. Then select "Activity Log". This will tell you all the connection going through the proxy. Another way is to go to the ProxyNow! machine, launch the browser (make sure that the browser is configure to go through the proxy), and enter this in the address "http://transaction/" or "http://www.transaction.com/". This will show you the currently active connection from a workstation to the Internet. From these, you should be able to find out who is causing this problem.

Q: How do I configured ProxyNow! to use my leased line for Internet connection?

A: You do not need any special configuration, ProxyNow! assume that it is using a leased line by default. To make sure, launch "ProxyConfig Console", click on "Connection" icon. Make sure that the "Active Profile" is empty. Try to use ProxyNow! as normal. However, if ProxyNow! does not seems to work, launch "ProxyConfig Console", click on "Connection" icon. Again, make sure that "Active Profile" is empty. Now, click on the "Connection" button on the right-hand side. On the "ProxyNow IP Address (only is using LAN)", enter the ProxyNow! IP address. Now click "Add" follow by "Save Settings" button.

Q: OK, I've follow the instructions for a leased line setup. But it still does not work.

A: First, check whether the ProxyNow! Server is started and running. First, go to "MS-DOS Prompt" in Microsoft Windows 95/98 or "Command Prompt" in Microsoft Windows NT. Then type this command "netstat -na | more" and press the "Enter" key. You should see the following:

C:\WINDOWS\Desktop>netstat -na

"TCP 10.8.0.123:3128 0.0.0.0:0 LISTENING"

If you do not see the above line, please make sure that the ProxyNow! Server is started. If you are sure that you have started the ProxyNow! Server, please use a text editor to open up the file "c:\ProxyNow_Startup.log". Go to the last line, it will usually indicate any startup problem ProxyNow! encounter when starting up. After confirming that ProxyNow! Server is started and running, we will need to check the leased line connection. This PC might not have been properly configured for leased line connection. Go to "Start -> Run" and enter "telnet www.internetnow.com.my 80". If you are unable to connect, there are something wrong with the leased line configuration, please consult your network administrator.

Q: Why "ping" does not work on my workstation? I try to ping a server in the Internet but it does not work.

A: ProxyNow! does not allow ping to pass through the proxy. More specifically, ProxyNow! does not allow ICMP packets to pass through. So ping, tracert, and any other program that uses ICMP will not works through the proxy). You can only ping a server on the Internet from the ProxyNow! Server machine when it is connected to the Internet because it does not go through the proxy.

Q: Can I use telnet through ProxyNow!?

A: There are two ways to use telnet through ProxyNow!. 1) First, you need to telnet to ProxyNow!, then from there telnet out to Internet. Launch the telnet program with "Start -> Run -> telnet". Q: How do I configure Norton EMail Protection to work with ProxyNow!?

A: There are two choices. But there will be a slight problem. Since Norton EMail Protection is not configurable, the ProxyNow! must listen on port 110. This is the Internet standard port for checking incoming mail. Since most email server uses this port as well, if ProxyNow! and MailNow!(or other email server) are installed together, you will have a conflict. You will have to change the MailNow! port to something else and change all the incoming port on client's email reader as well. (1) This only work if all the client access the same POP3 server. Launch "ProxyConfig Console", and click on "Protocol" icon. Create a new protocol as follow:

Protocol Name : NortonEMailGateWay (Or you can put anything you wish)

Driver Name : tcpmapping.now

Type : TCP

Listen at port : 110

Domain : your ISP POP3 server (The POP3 server you are accessing)

Mapping Port : 110

Direction : Outgoing

Click on "Add" follow by "Save Settings" button. Then on Outlook Express or any other email client, change incoming server to "127.0.0.1", username to "username/proxyip". For example, if my username is "cychan", the ProxyNow! IP is "10.0.0.1", it will be "cychan/10.0.0.1". (2) This method allow you to access a different POP3 server if you wish. But this will need ProxyNow! version 3 or above. Launch "ProxyConfig Console", and click on "Protocol" icon. Create a new protocol as follow:

Protocol Name : Norton EMailGateWay (Or you can put anything you wish)

Driver Name : pop3.now

Type : TCP

Listen at port : 110

Click on "Add" follow by "Save Settings" button. Then on Outlook Expres or any other email client, change incoming server to "127.0.0.1", username to "username.i.p.s.isppopserver/proxyip". For example, if my username is "cychan", the ProxyNow! IP is "10.0.0.1", and my ISP POP3 server is "pop5.jaring.my", it will be cychan.i.p.s.pop5.jaring.my/10.0.0.1".

Type : TCP

Listen at port : 6667

Domain : comicsrv1.microsoft.com

Mapping Port : 6667

Direction : Outgoing

Click "Add", then the "Save Settings" button. In the workstation, access the Microsoft Chat menu and select "File", "New Connection". Under "Server" enter the ProxyNow! machine's IP address.

Q: Does ProxyNow! support NetMeeting, VDOLive?

A: The current version 2.51 of ProxyNow! does not support NetMeeting or VDOLive. We are currently working on this and a fix should be available on the next major release.

Q: Does ProxyNow! work with DSL/ADSL?

A: Yes, ProxyNow! will work with DSL and with ADSL. In fact, ProxyNow! works with any kind of Internet connection because ProxyNow! can be configured to use the internal network card that connects to the rest of your local network. In this case, ProxyNow! will let Microsoft Windows takes care of passing all network traffic bound for the Internet to the proper Internet connection. Note that however ProxyNow! can only automatically dial an Internet connection if it is done through Dial-up Networking. Some DSL and ADSL required you to run a custom program manually to establish the connection. But sine most DSL and ADSL services charge a flat fee, you can just put the custom program in the startup folder to start the dial-up process automatically.

Q: I notice from the feature list that ProxyNow! keep a log of all the Internet activity. How can I access the log and what is the format?

A: ProxyNow! does keep a log of all Internet activity. Those log files are located under the "log" folder on where you have install ProxyNow!. The file name follow this standard, yyyymmdd, where yyyy is the year, mm is the month, and dd is the day on which the log is recorded. You can use any text editor to open up the log file. Each line in the log file represent one transaction. They are in the following format:(","(comma) is the field delimiter)

1: Client IP

2: Not used

3: Authenticated username

4: Date of request received (Hardcoded to dd/mm/yyyy)

5: Time of request received (Hardcoded to hh:mm:ss)

6: First line of HTTP request (Surrounded by quote)

7: HTTP respond status code

8: Content length sent to client (in bytes)

9: Origin server (Surrounded by quote)

10: Time spend to service the request (in seconds)

11: Protocol

12: URL (Surrounded by quote)

Q: Can I do proxy cascading with ProxyNow!? More specifically, we can only access the Internet by going through a proxy server. But it does not provide some of the features that we wanted in ProxyNow!. So, can I configure ProxyNow! in such a way that my workstation will connect to ProxyNow!, and ProxyNow! will connect to the proxy server which will eventually go out to the Internet?

A: Yes, ProxyNow! does support proxy cascading. However, the configuration are currently not available on the ProxyConfig Console. You will need to modified the configuration file directly. First, stop the ProxyNow! Server. The configuration file is called "proxynow.cfg" under windows directory. In Microsoft Windows 95/98, the file will be "c:\windows\proxynow.cfg", and in Microsoft Windows NT, the file will be "c:\winnt\proxynow.cfg". Open the file with any text editor. Look for "ENABLEDPROXYCASCADING=0", change it to "ENABLEDPROXYCASCADING=1". Then change "PROXYCASCADEPORT=3128" to the port, and "PROXYCASCADEHOST=proxy.internetnow.com.my" to the address of the cascading proxy. Please note that cascading only works with HTTP and HTTPS protocol.

Q: I have enabled "User Rights" to restrict user access to the Internet. It work perfectly on the workstation, but it does not seems to work when I use the Microsoft Internet Explorer in the ProxyNow! machine. The same is true for "Access Control". What is wrong here?

A: You must configure Microsoft Internet Explorer to go through ProxyNow! as you had configure the workstation. In addition, you will need to go to "Tools -> Internet Options -> Connections". Select the dial-up profile that you are ask ProxyNow! to use, then click on "Settings...". Uncheck "Automatically detect settings", and uncheck "Use automatic configuration script". Check "Use a proxy server", enter ProxyNow! IP address under "Address", and ProxyNow! port(default 3128) under "Port". Click "OK" twice.

Q: How do I backup ProxyNow! to ease reinstallation in case the machine crash?

A: There are two files to backup, the configuration file and license file. All ProxyNow! configuration are save in one file. The configuration file is called "proxynow.cfg" under windows directory. In Microsoft Windows 95/98, the file will be "c:\windows\proxynow.cfg", and in Microsoft Windows NT, the file will be "c:\winnt\proxynow.cfg". The license file is named "license.lic" and it is store under the ProxyNow! directory. By default, this is "c:\program files\internetnow!\proxynow! x.xx\". To restore ProxyNow!, install ProxyNow! from the installation CD. Then, copy the backup copy of "proxynow.cfg" to windows directory ("\windows\" for Microsoft Windows 95/98, or "\winnt\" for Microsoft Windows NT). In addition, copy the backup copy of "license.lic" to where ProxyNow! is installed. But if you had re-install Microsoft Windows, you will need to ask for a new license from your dealer or InternetNow Sdn Bhd. You could obtain our current contact information from our web site, "www.internetnow.com.my".

Select "Yes" under "User Rights (Password / IP Management), and click on "Save Settings" button. Click on "User Manager" icon on the left hand side. Select "By Password" under "Manage by". Now, the restriction has been activated. Secondly, you will need to defined the list of username and password for your users. On the same "User Manager" page, enter the username under "Users/Groups". Then the password under "Password" and "Password Again". Now click on "Add" button. Repeat this for all the users. After finished entering all the user, click on "Save Settings".

Q: I use the "ProxyConfig Console" to make some changes to ProxyNow! Server, then I click on "Save Settings" and everything seems to be fine. Next I close the "ProxyConfig Console" and then re-run it again, my changes is lost. They are not saved. Why?

A: There are two possibility. First, launch Windows Explorer and go to windows directory. Locate the file "proxynow.cfg", right click on it and select "Properties". Make sure that the "Attributes" of "Read-only", "Hidden" and "System" are all unchecked. Secondly, launch Windows Explorer, go to where ProxyNow! is installed. By default, this is usually in "c:\program files\internetnow!\proxynow! x.xx". Check whether the file "proxynow.cfg" exists in this folder. If it does, delete it and restart the ProxyNow! Server.

MailNow!

Q: I already have a mail server, such as Microsoft Exchange, Lotus Domino, or Novell GroupWise. Why should I need MailNow!?

A: In those cases, MailNow! would also act as an Internet email gateway. Mail server such as Microsoft Exchange, Lotus Domino, or Novell GroupWise can only act as an Internet email server is a leased line is present. Furthermore, most of them do not understand some of the Internet email protocol such as UUCP. So, in a environment where a dial-up connection (or even xDSL where the IP is not fixed) is used with the protocol UUCP, VPOP, or ETRN etc, MailNow! is needed to act as a gateway between the Internet email and the internal mail server.

Q: When I run MailNow! console, it ask me to login. What is the "127.0.0.1" means in "Connect To"? What "Login Name" and "Login Password" should I use?

A: "127.0.0.1" is an Internet standard for loopback address. Is actually refering back to the same PC running MailNow!. If you have already specified an IP address for the MailNow! machine(which is recomended to do so), you could put that IP address in "Connect To" as well. It will have the same effect. It is also use for remote administration. Please refer to the remote administration question for further information. The administrator login name is "root". The default login password is "Admin123".

Q: When login using MailNow! console, it says cannot connect to server, what is happening?

A: Make sure the MailNow! server is started. Under Microsoft Windows 95/98 platform, you should see a small icon on the Microsoft Windows tray area. When you move the mouse pointer over it, a tool tip will show up saying MailNow! Server. If the icon is not there, you could start the server from "Start -> Programs -> Startup -> MailNow! Server". Under Microsoft Windows NT, open "Control Panel". Double click on "Services" icon. Look for "MailNow! Server" in the list of "Services". If "MailNow! Server" is not in the list, it means the service is not install. To install the service, run "Command Prompt". Change directory to where MailNow! is installed. Then run this command "mailnow -install". Once the "MailNow! Server" entry is in the "Services" list, make sure that the "Status" is "Started". If not, start it by selecting "MailNow! Server" and click on "Start" button.

Q: How do I configure a workstation to send and receive emails?

A: MailNow! supports any Internet compliant Email Client like Outlook Express, Netscape Messenger, Outlook, Eudora. Just make sure that TCP/IP is installed and configured. To test this, you can ping the MailNow! Server IP Address. For example, go to "Start -> Run" and enter "ping mailnowip", where mailnowip is the MailNow! Server IP address. If you see a "Reply from ...", it means your TCP/IP is properly configured and the connection is working. Else, you have a networking problem. Please refer to a later question about "I cannot send or received emails".

Q: What is all these ETRN, VPOP, UUCP term means?

A: These are different domain 'mechanism' to retrieve and form emails under a single domain name. They only applied in a dial-up context, i.e. customer do not have a leased line but want to maintain their own domain name. However, which 'mechanism' is available depends on the ISP or 3rd Party Provider. For example, JARING supplies UUCP for corporate customer. Nasionet and Putranet supply ETRN.

Q: Can I ask MailNow! to retrieve my personal POP3 email?

A: Yes, you could ask MailNow! to retrieve one external POP3 email for each user. There are several ways of doing this. This are discuss under the the question "How do a user change his/her own password and other settings(auto-forward etc) themself?".

Q: Can I ask MailNow! to retrieve my web-based email, for example, HotMail or Yahoo Mail?

A: Currently, MailNow! does not retrieve web-based email. This is because they are not standard POP3 mail boxes.

Q: How do I perform a remote administration?

A: First, you will need a copy of the MailNow! Console program on the computer where the remote administration is running from. You could installed it from the InternetNow CD. Once installed, run MailNow! Console from "Start -> Programs -> MailNow! x.xx -> MailNow! Console". Now you will be presented with a login dialog. Under "Connect To", enter the MailNow! server machine's IP address. Enter "root" as "Login Name", and enter your administrator password under "Login Password". The default administrator password is "Admin123" (case sensitive). Now click on "OK" and you can now configure the MailNow! server as usual.

Q: How do a user change his/her own password and other settings(auto-forward etc) themself ?

A: There are three ways of doing these. 1) Using the MailNow! Console. You will need the administrator password to access the MailNow! Console. Normal user should use the steps outline in (2) and (3). Run "MailNow! Console" from "Start -> Programs -> MailNow! x.xx -> MailNow! Console". Now you will be presented with a login dialog. Under "Connect To", enter the MailNow! server machine's IP address or just "127.0.0.1" is the MailNow! server is running on the same machine. Enter "root" as "Login Name", and enter your administrator password under "Login Password". The default administrator password is "Admin123" (case sensitive). Now click on "OK". Select the user on the user's list. Then click on "Edit User". All the settings for password, POP3 proxy, and auto-forwarding is available on this dialog. 2) Send an email to "userinfo@yourdomain" (for example, "userinfo@internetnow.com.my"). You should get a reply from MailNow! server shortly with the subject "User Request Form". Reply to this email, and fill your details together with the changes. 3) (Only available for version 2.52 or above) First, make sure that your browser's proxy setting is configure to "not use" proxy for your MailNow! server machine's IP address. Launch your browser, then enter "http://mailnowip:8383/". For example, if your MailNow! server machine's IP address is 10.0.0.1, you should enter "http://10.0.0.1:8383/". You will be prompted to enter your username and password. Enter your full email address in "User Name" (For example, cychan@internetnow.com.my). The password is your MailNow!'s user password. You will be presented with a webpage to change all the settings.

Q: MailNow! does not dial. I know that it is suppose to dial at this time, but I don't see any activity on the modem.

A: If the MailNow! is install on a Microsoft Windows NT server, please check whether it has expired. Run MailNow! Console. Login using "root" with password "Admin123". Go to "Admin", "License". Check whether there is an Activation Key. If not, your copy of MailNow! is likely expired. Please contact "inquiry@internetnow.com.my" for more information. If the activation key is presence, check the value under "Evaluation". If the value is not zero, and the value is greater than the number of days since you installed MailNow!, again, your copy of MailNow! is expired. If the license is not the problem, we should check the connection to Internet. First, determine whether MailNow! is dialing by itself or utilizing other services to connect to Internet, such as ProxyNow!. If the MailNow! is dialing by itself, go to "Setup -> System" from MailNow! Console menu. Click on "Connection" tab. Make sure the "DialUp Profile", "DialUp Profile User" and "DialUp Profile Password" is correct. If the settings are correct, close MailNow! Console. Then, shutdown MailNow! Server. Try to dial-up manually from Dial-up Networking using the same Dial-up Networking profile, ISP username and ISP password as used by MailNow!. However, if MailNow! is utilizing other services to connect to the Internet, please make sure that there are working correctly.

Q: I had just setup MailNow!. When I try to send a mail out through MailNow!, I got a return message saying something like "relaying denied". What is wrong?

A: There are a few possibilities. 1) Make sure that the outgoing SMTP relay server you had configure in the MailNow! is provided by the ISP that you are dialing into. Most ISP will not allow a user from different ISP to send an email through their SMTP server. You could check the current outgoing SMTP server by launching the "MailNow! Console". Login using "root" with password "Admin123". Select "Setup -> System" from the menu. The outgoing SMTP server is under "Outgoing SMTP Relay Server". 2) This will only happen on a leased line condition. Most ISP will expect a leased line user to have their own SMTP server. If you try to send email through their SMTP server, it will be rejected. In this case, you have to configure MailNow! as an SMTP server. First, shutdown MailNow! server. Use a text editor such as notepad to open the "expmail.ini" file in windows directory. In Microsoft Windows 95/98, this is usually at "c:\windows\expmail.ini". In Microsoft Windows NT, this is usually at "c:\winnt\expmail.ini". Add the following two lines after the line "[System]"

MXEnable=1

DNSIP=your ISP DNS server IP address

Now start MailNow! Server. Launch the "MailNow! Console". Login using "root" with password "Admin123". Select "Setup -> System" from the menu. Enter a dummy SMTP server under "Outgoing SMTP Relay Server", such as "dummy.com".

Q: Bounce mail from Yahoo Mail or Hotmail

A: If you are using UUCP with a newly register ".com.my", sometimes testing with Yahoo and Hotmail, the mail sent to that domain can bounce back. This is normally due to JARING configuration. Just forward the bounced email to noc@jaring.my. you will get a response from them. If you are sending emails to Yahoo Mail, Hotmail or any other web based email, please remember that most of them impose a mailbox size. If the email you are trying to send when combined with the emails already in his/her mailbox exceed that limit, you will get a bounce mail.

Q: It dial, but doesn't connect to the ISP. It just keep dialing and dropping the line.

A: If MailNow! uses other services, for example a proxy or router, to access the Internet, then you should check on those services. However, if MailNow! is dialing by itself, then shutdown MailNow! server. Dial-up manually using the same Dial-up Networking profile, ISP username and ISP password as the MailNow! server. Make sure that you could connect to your ISP and the browser could surf as usual(after disabling the proxy setting in the browser, but please remember to enable it back after the testing).

Q: How do I backup MailNow! to ease reinstallation in case the machine crash?

A: There are a few things to backup. 1) The configuration file is "expmail.ini" under the windows directory. In Microsoft Windows 95/98, the file will be "c:\windows\expmail.ini", and in Microsoft Windows NT, the file will be "c:\winnt\expmail.ini". 2) The user database is named "config.mdb" and it is store under the MailNow! directory. By default, this is "c:\program files\internetnow!\mailnow! x.xx\". 3) The "users" folder in the MailNow! directory. By default, this is "c:\program files\internetnow!\mailnow! x.xx\". You might want to backup this folder periodically if you have user accessing the MailNow! using IMAP protocol. To restore MailNow!, install MailNow! from the installation CD. Then, copy the backup copy of "expmail.ini" to windows directory ("\windows\" for Microsoft Windows 95/98, or "\winnt\" for Microsoft Windows NT). In addition, copy the backup copy of user database "config.mdb" and "users" folder to where MailNow! is installed. But if you had re-install Microsoft Windows, you will need to ask for a new license from your dealer or InternetNow Sdn Bhd. You could obtain our current contact information from our web site, "www.internetnow.com.my".

Q: Someone send me an email containing some attachments, but I cannot received it. I ask him to send a few more times, but I still cannot received it. However, I could received those without attachment. What is wrong?

A: Run Microsoft Windows Explorer, go to the "Temp" folder under where MailNow! is installed. By default, this is "c:\program files\internetnow!\mailnow! x.xx\temp". Delete all the files with extension ".tmp" in this folder.

Q: I cannot send or received emails, why?

A: There are a lot of factors involve in sending and receiving emails, from the workstation your is using, connection to MailNow! Server, ISP mail server, all the mail agents in between, and all the way to the sender/receiver. Let us examine each of them in turns. 1) Workstation: First, check the configuration of the email client. Is all the configuration set correctly? Anyone change the configuration recently? If the configuration is set correctly, the next thing to check is the connection to MailNow! Server. This itself involved a few things. The TCP/IP protocol setting, the network card, the network cable, the hub(if one is used), and the MailNow! Server. First thing to try, go to "Start -> Run" and enter "telnet mailnowip 25"(if cannot send email) or "telnet mailnowip 110"(if cannot received email) where "mailnowip" is the IP address of the MailNow! Server. You should see either a "220 MailNow! SMTP 1999" or "+OK MailNow! POP3 Server Gateway 1999". If you received a reply, skip to step 2. Else, there is a problem connecting to the MailNow! Server. Now, go to "Start -> Run" and enter "command" on Microsoft Windwos 95/98, or enter "cmd" on Microsoft Windows NT. Then enter "ping mailnowip", where mailnowip is the IP address of the MailNow! Server. You should get a "Reply from ..." or an error such as "Destination host unreachable" or "Request timeout". If you get a "Reply from ...", it means the MailNow! Server program is most likely down. Please go to the MailNow! Server computer and check whether the program is running. Else if you received a "Destination host unreachable", is means you TCP/IP setting has not been set or it is incompatible with the TCP/IP setting on the MailNow! Server. Please check whether your IP address is of the same class and the subnet mask is compatible. Also, check that the IP address that you are using has not been used by someone else. IP addresses are unique and cannot be shared. Else if you get a "Request timeout", please check whether is hub is working. Is the network cable plug into the hub's jack? Is the status light on the hub green on that particular jack for your workstation and the server? Try using another network cable. Try using another network card. Also check whether you are using the correct driver for your network card. 2) MailNow! Server: Make sure that the MailNow! server is up and running. Is the MailNow! Server computer on? Is the MailNow! Server program running? If the server is running on Microsoft Windows 95/98, press "Ctrl Alt Del" and look for "mailnow.exe". Else if the server is running on Microsoft Windows NT, right click on the task bar and select "Task Manager". Select the "Process" tab and look for "mailnow.exe". If you cannot find the "mailnow.exe", it is not running. In Microsoft Windows 95/98, you could start the MailNow! Server from "Start -> Programs -> Startup -> MailNow! Server". On Microsoft Windows NT, go to "Start -> Settings -> Control Panel", double click "Services". Look for "MailNow! Server" and click "Start". However, is "mailnow.exe" does exists, try to restart the MailNow! Server's computer. If it still does not work after restarting the computer, check the TCP/IP setting and networking of the MailNow! Server computer. The procedure are descript on the last part of step 1. 3) ISP: There are a few things we need to find out from here. a)Is the MailNow! Server be able to connect to your ISP? b)Is the MailNow! Server be able to connect to the ISP mail server? c)Is your ISP's mail server operational? But before you check for all these, take a few minutes to go through the MailNow! configuration to check whether it is correct. Maybe someone has change the configuration without your knowledge. For (a), launch "MailNow! Console", login using username "root" and password "Admin123"(default password, if not already been change by administrator). Left click on "Activity", then right click and select "Online". Then select "Admin -> Activate Now!" and look at the "Activity" log for any error message. The error message should give you an idea of what is wrong. This should also tell you about (b), whether you are able to connect to your ISP mail server. Also, check whether your modem is dialing at this time. Is it able to connect to your ISP? If not, try to dial to your ISP manually by stopping the MailNow! Server and use the dial-up profile in Dial-Up Networking to dial. If you are able to dial and connect manually, check the dial-up configuration in MailNow! under "Setup -> System -> Connection" if MailNow! is dialing, or the proxy setting if MailNow! is using it services to access the Internet. Else if you are not able to dial and connect manually, first check whether the Dial-Up Networking profile is configure correctly(please refer to the User Guide for details). Second, check whether you modem and the modem driver is working. Try changing to a different modem that you are sure is working(please refer to the question on diagnosing modem). Thirdly, check with your ISP whether you account has expired or suspended, or whether they are having any technical difficulty, or maybe you or someone else had recently change your ISP password. However, if you are able to connect to your ISP, then we need to check whether your ISP mail server is working (c). The checking procedure will depends on what type of mail server your ISP is providing, but all these procedure assume you already have a direct connection to your ISP. For UUCP mail server, go to "Start -> Run" and enter "telnet uucphost 540" where uucphost is the UUCP host your ISP had allocated for you. For example, "telnet uucp1.jaring.my 540". If successful, you should see

login: Uinow

Password: xxxxx

xxxxxxxxxxxx

(Note: you might not see the xxxx if "Local Echo" is not enabled in telnet). 4) Intermediate email agent and the original sender/receiver: Try to send or receive a third party. As someone else to send you an email or send an email to someone else. Or use a Hotmail or Yahoo Mail. If the delivery of emails failed, it usually give you a reply stating the problem.

Q: Netscape Messenger give me an error of "Cannot save to disk".

A: Older version of Netscape Messenger seems to have problem with some badly formed email messages. This usually happen to Netscape Communicator version prior to 4.72. Please update to the newest version.

GENERAL

Q: How do I check whether my modem is working?

A: Firstly, check whether the modem is power on. Is the phone line plug into the modem and the correct jack is used? Is your phone line working? Try to use a direct phone line, instead of a PABX/Keyphone line. Try to plug the phone line into a single line phone and dial a number to check whether the phone line is working. Is the modem cable correctly plug into both sides? If the modem is using a serial port on your computer, is the serial port working? Try using a different serial port, or try using another computer to test it out. If the modem is using a USB port, try using a different USB port, or try using another computer to test it out. Secondly, had you installed the proper modem driver? Try removing the existing driver and reinstall again. Thirdly, use the "Hyper Terminal" program that comes together with Microsoft Windows to test the modem. The program is located under "Start -> Programs -> Accessories". Launch it, and it will ask you for a "Connection Description". Just enter anything you like, such as "aaa", "abc", etc. Then, under "Connect using", select the communication port that connect to yours modem. Lets say your modem connect to "Com2" of your computer, then select "Direct to Com2". Click "OK" button, and you will be asked for "Port Settings". Use the default and just press "Ok". If it give you an error now, either your communication port is not working, some other program is using the communication port, or the communication port you selected is wrong. Try shuting down all other program and try again. Else if it does not give you an error, enter "atz" and press Enter. If the word "atz" does not come out on the screen, either the program is unable to communicate with your modem or the communication port you selected is wrong. Else if everything is working, you should see a reply "OK". Then enter "atdt xxxx" and press Enter, where xxxx is a valid phone number. You should hear your modem dialing at this moment. To stop the dialing, enter "atz" and press Enter.
